European tallest waterfall and the world’s 5th highest too

The Krimml waterfalls

Only 10 minutes drive from Haus Barber or a short local train ride away the Krimml Waterfalls are the fifth highest waterfalls in the world. With over 350,000 visitors each year the Krimml waterfalls are one of the most visited tourist features in Austria. A hiking trail built by the Austrian Alpine Association (OeAV) makes it possible to get very close to this breath taking nature spectacle, with sensational views. Bask in the impressive power of the water amidst the gorgeous scenery of the Hohe Tauern National Park.

Europe’s highest waterfalls have won a number of prizes over the centuries. In 1796 the Krimml Waterfalls were called the “biggest and most magnificent natural spectacle in the State of Salzburg.” In 1845 an earlier version of the Baedek Travel Guide even boasted that the “the monarchy’s most beautiful waterfalls are located behind Krimml.”

In those times access to the 380 meter Krimml Waterfalls by tourists was unthinkable. It was not until 1876 that the young Alpine Association planned a footpath with bridges and observation platforms along the three cascades. The new footpath was finally opened In 1879. The rush to see the waterfalls did not occur until the Pinzgau Railroad line was completed in 1898. In 1967 the Krimml Waterfalls won the European Nature Conservation Award.

For more than 100 years the well constructed Waterfall Trail with its numerous vantage points and platforms, has taken nature lovers very close to this natural spectacle of the Krimml Waterfalls. After a 10 – 15 minutes’ walk from the parking area you reach the lowest waterfall, from where the serpentine Waterfall Trail leads up to the top waterfall (walking time approx. 1 ¼ hours) and into the Krimml Achental valley. Along the trail vantage platforms afford sensational views of the roaring Waterfalls. The information points alog the way will provide you with some facts worth knowing. Up to the vantage platform Kürsingerplatz the trail is built to meet the needs of disabled visitors too.

So just what is there for you to fill your time in this region?
Well you could spend a morning at Hitler’s Tea House (The Kehlsteinhaus) at Berchtesgaden.
The so-called “Eagle’s Nest” was built as a teahouse for Adolf Hitler’s 50th birthday. Perched on a mountain summit, its unusual position makes of the daring project a unique engineering feat. What few realize is that Hitler’s home and headquarters – the second seat of 3rd Reich power – were located at Obersalzberg, at the foot of the Eagle’s Nest mountain.
After a morning visiting the eagles nest why not pop into Lake Königssee, Germany’s cleanest and highest lake (at 603m) is situated in the heart of the Berchtesgaden National Park in Bavaria. Being 190m deep and ca. eight kilometres long the Königssee is framed by impressing mountains, like the mount Watzmann (2nd highest in Bavaria),which is a 10 minute drive from the Tea House. A real must see experience during your stay.
Both National Park communities, Neukirchen and Bramberg, serve as bases for magical bike tours offering a full range of difficulty: family-friendly routes, challenging climbs, breath-taking single trails. In total, nature fans visiting Wildkogel Holiday Arena can look forward to 800 km of mountain bike tours, affording amazing views across the handlebars of the mighty glaciers between the Grossglockner and Grossvenediger mountains. Wildkogel Bike Arena was chosen by renowned “Bike” magazine as one of the Alps’ best biking areas.
Take a gondola ride up the local mountains and ramble through the great mountains and countryside stopping in one of the local mountain restaurants for a snack and drink.
